Hello! Let me introduce myself.
For over a decade I dedicated my time to paddling kayaks as fast as I could. I competed at two Olympic Games and absolutely loved my time in the sport. Now I have hung up my paddles and embraced my creative side. I hope to transfer the commitment, dedication and standard of excellence required by a professional athlete to follow my other passion of creating gardens.
Now based in North Berwick, I founded Rachel Schofield Garden Design in 2018 and have since been building a portfolio of gardens across the country.
I am an RHS level 3 qualified horticulturalist, educated at Berkshire College of Agriculture and Brooksby Melton College. I studied Garden Design at the Botanica Garden School, and have worked freelance for designers including Emma Scarborough.
One of my career highlights include working at the 2019 Chelsea Flower Show, where I assisted a world class planting team, working on the award-winning “Welcome to Yorkshire” Garden by Mark Gregory.
Garden Design Services
My design services are individually tailored to your requirements, whether it's a complete redesign and build or a planting plan you're after. Here are the three most popular packages;
Comprehensive Garden Design and Build
Starting with an initial conversation to hear your requirements and desired uses for the space, we will have the existing garden surveyed before creating a new layout design for the space.
I will then work from this initial concept design to make any tweaks, adding detail and finishing touches before drawing up the final plan, along with complete material specifications required by landscapers and other professionals to draw up a quote for the build.
Collaborating with landscapers, I will oversee the build ensuring the design standards and intentions are met throughout, as well as creating a planting scheme, before arranging delivery of the plants and setting them out on site.
Finally, I will provide maintenance advice and periodically visit your newly planted garden as it settles in and establishes itself.
Planting design
If you have a tired, overgrown or empty border that needs filling with beautiful plants, I can put together a bespoke planting scheme for your garden. Combining plants that will thrive in your garden’s growing conditions, provide year round interest and create a “Wow” factor, the plan will be tailored to your lifestyle whether it's a low maintenance garden you're after or something more specialised. You will receive "planting boards" to convey the planting scheme, as well as a detailed plant list and the option of a layout plan. Within this package I also offer sourcing, delivery and setting out of the plants on site.
Concept planning // Layout design
If you would just like some ideas of where to start I can visit the site with you, hear about what you want from the space and put together a concept plan to convey a layout. A concept plan involves less of the build detail that the "Design and Build" package goes into, but it's proved popular with clients who would like to take the project on themselves, or gradually work towards the finished product over time.
